Six Degrees of Freedom for string quartet (2023)
Duration: 9'
Program Notes:
Six Degrees of Freedom- "the freedom of movement of a rigid body in three dimensional space", a mechanical concept used to describe three types of rotations and the three axes on which they occur.
In this piece, each type of rotation and axis is assigned its own sound palette inspired by their real-life occurrences. Extended techniques are included as literal imitations of these sounds, while other musical elements (dynamics, pitch, bowing, etc) are incorporated for their conceptual and physical similarities.
Each section of the piece emulates a type of rotation and the axis upon which it occurs. Structural and motivic development use the idea of rigid bodies in free movement to create experiences of stability and perpetual motion.
Recording: reading of Six Degrees of Freedom by the New Composer's String Quartet- Lilit Hartunian and Heather Braun-Bakken, (violins), Sam Kelder (viola), Rafael Popper-Kaiser (cello) at Berklee College of Music on March 10th, 2023.
